Care Guide

Light

Thrives in full sun; requires at least 6–8 hours daily. Indoors, place near a bright south-facing window. Outdoors, it tolerates direct sunlight very well.

Water

Water thoroughly but let soil dry completely before watering again. In active growth (spring–summer): water every 2–3 weeks. In winter: reduce watering to once a month or less.

Temperature & Humidity

Ideal temperature: 20–35°C (68–95°F). Can tolerate short periods of heat and drought. Not frost-hardy—keep above 10°C (50°F) indoors during winter.

Soil & Potting

Use a well-draining cactus/succulent soil mix. Add sand, pumice, or perlite for better aeration. Large columnar types may require heavy pots for stability.

Fertilizing

Apply a balanced cactus fertilizer once a month in spring and summer. Avoid overfertilizing, as too much nitrogen can cause weak, soft growth. Stop feeding in winter dormancy.

Pruning & Maintenance

Pruning rarely needed; only remove damaged or diseased stems. Rotate pot occasionally to promote even growth. Support tall plants with stakes if needed indoors.

Propagation

Propagated from stem cuttings. Allow cuttings to callus for 1–2 weeks before planting in dry soil. Rooting occurs within 4–6 weeks in warm conditions.

Common Problems & Solutions

Yellow or soft stems: Overwatering → Reduce watering and improve soil drainage. Shriveling: Underwatering → Increase watering frequency slightly during active growth. Pest issues (mealybugs, scale): Wipe with neem oil or treat with insecticidal soap. Leaning stems: Insufficient light → Move to a brighter spot or supplement with grow lights.
