Care Guide

Light

Needs full sunlight for 6+ hours daily. Place near a bright south- or west-facing window. Outdoors, it thrives in direct sun.

Water

Water deeply but infrequently. Allow soil to dry completely between watering. In winter, water only once a month or less. Overwatering causes root rot quickly.

Temperature & Humidity

Prefers warm conditions: 20–35°C (68–95°F). Can tolerate hot, dry environments well. Not frost-hardy—keep above 10°C (50°F).

Soil & Potting

Use a cactus/succulent mix with sand or perlite. Pot must have good drainage holes. Clay or terracotta pots work best to prevent water buildup.

Fertilizing

Feed with a cactus fertilizer once a month in spring and summer. Do not fertilize in winter dormancy.

Pruning & Maintenance

Minimal pruning needed. Remove dead or damaged pads with sterilized tools. Wear gloves—its tiny glochids (hair-like spines) are irritating to skin.

Propagation

Propagates easily from pads (cladodes). Let the cut pad callus for a few days, then plant in dry soil. Rooting takes 2–4 weeks in warm, dry conditions.

Common Problems & Solutions

Yellowing pads: Overwatering → Reduce watering and improve drainage. Shriveling pads: Underwatering → Water thoroughly, but not too often. Soft or rotting base: Root rot → Remove affected parts and replant healthy pads. Pest attacks (mealybugs/scale): Wipe pads with neem oil or rubbing alcohol.
